The
tour of Acate starts from the central Piazza Libertà, where
the Chiesa Madre and the Castello are located.
The
church, reconstructed after the 1693 and 1846 earthquakes, has just
remains of the original structure, such as the arches of the chorus'
vault and parts of the apse and of the transept.
On
top of the hill rises, the castle of the princes Biscari. It was
built in 1494 and then restored in the18th century. The present
outlook is that of a derelict building, it being afterwards abandoned.
The prison, inside, is still in a good condition.
The
3 naves' church of San Vincenzo, in the vicinity of the Piazza,
keeps the relics of the Saint and numerous notable stuccoes. San
Vincenzo, protector of the town, is celebrated with an annual feast
and a "Palio" (horses' race) across the streets of the
town.
