The
highly specialized agriculture is the basic Comiso's business. The
highest fertility and the positive location of its lands has already
been mentioned. The main productions are those of early-fruits,
fruits and vegetables. The presence of the close market of Vittoria
represents, for Comiso as well, an essential support to the promotion
and commercialisation of the products.
Nevertheless
industry, here born in ancient times with comparison to the almost
entire rest of Sicily, is well developed, notably the building industry,
famous for working the typical "stone" of Comiso, looking-like
marble and used as a construction material. Soap and paper factories,
dating from the late Middle Ages, witness, as well, the earliest
industrialization of this area.
There
are, then, mills, pasta and pastry factories, fodder mills, carob,
almond, wine and olive oil factories.
