DONNALUCATA
The
town of Donnalucata administratively belongs to the municipality
of Scicli and is an interesting tourist site with important historic
roots.
According
to several historians, its birth date back to a miraculous apparition
of the Madonna, in 1091, who succoured the village, assaulted by
the Arabian fleet, who attempted to re-conquer Sicily, occupied
by Normans. The place-name "Donnalucata" right refers
to this "Madonna covered with light", appeared that night.
Legend
apart, it is certain that the sweet coast profile made Donnalucata
the natural port of Scicli: "Marsa Sikla" (from Arab "Scicli's
Port") was in fact denominated its area during the Arabian
domination.
Economy
is based on fishing, agriculture, and, above all, tourism, the village
boasting a picturesque look, broad and beautiful beaches and good
tourism accommodation structures.
For
art lovers, there are two interesting sites: The Duomo, built, in
1883, in blocks of light limestone, and the church of the "Madonna
delle Milizie", dating from the Norman rule, though few remnants
keeping from the original structure: ruins of a tower and of a monastery.
