Giarratana
(34 km from Ragusa; 3500 inhabitants; 520 m. a.s.l.; zip code 97019;
area code 0932; is the smallest and the less inhabited town in the
province.
It
has a very regular urban plan extending between mountains and plains.
Its
territory is highly mountainous and it is crossed by the Irminio's
River, having its source on the Monte Lauro (Mount Lauro).
An
artificial dam, accomplished along the river at about 10 km away
from Giarratana, represents today an important resource, agriculturally
and touristy, since the embankment has created a magnificent lake
and a splendid panorama.
