The
fruit of the clever foresight of the Town authorities and Co.pa.i,
a museum of the Sicilian "sfilato" (drawt thread) embroidery
technique has already opened in Chiaramonte Gulfi.
Located
in the charming medieval part of this mountain town, near the artistically
valuable Steps of S. Giovanni, the museum recreates the unmistakable
drawn-thread embroideries so hard to find nowadays.
It
is the product of a painstaking reconstructiOn based on precious
handicraft (furnishings, furniture,
photographs). Inside, you can admire unique specimens bearing witness
to an ancient past, such as a wooden loom and 18th century embroideries.
The
museum is therefore not just the keeper of what time and unjustified
neglect could destroy, but also, and most of all, the first step
taken towards new market opponunities for embroideries.
The
next step will be the opening, in the museum building, of a regional
school of Sicilian drawn-thread embroidery and or a permanent embroidery
exhibition, also accessible through its own website.
