The
economy of Modica is largely based on agriculture, producing a large
quantity of olives, carobs, legumes, wheat and all kinds of cereals.
The real support,
in this sector, is represented by the breeding, that of cattle,
especially, being the quality of the breed cattle from Modica highly
esteemed, both for its strong endurance against inconvenient weather
conditions and the excellent quality of flesh and milk.
This
business is notably supported, on the one hand, by the presence
on the territory of a large number of factories, which work and
market the breeding products, and, on the other, by the constant
occurrence of well-known promoting initiatives like feasts or festivals.
Other
important factories connected to agriculture are largely developed:
oil and wheat mills, wine factories, coffee (here roasted and blended)
and carob factories exporting in Italy, Europe and, not rarely, in
the other continents.
These
industrial activities are important for either aspects of production
and occupation.
During the last decade, particularly, the commerce has notably been
growing, thanks to the development of a prosperous commercial zone,
which gathers any sort of businesses: textile, house furniture,
electric household appliances, cars, etc.
Finally
it is worth-mentioning the establishment of several sporting and
hotel structures. Tourism, as commerce, has been, of recent, largely
developing, being, on the one hand, revaluated the archaeological,
art and historic sites of which the town and its territory are richest,
and, on the other, potentiated the up-to yesterday lacking hotel
and assistance structures, especially along the beautiful littoral.
