At
a general view the economy of the Province of Ragusa follows that
mainly agricultural of Sicily, in spite of not quite propitious
climate and geographical aspect.
Yet,
industry, here lately developed in comparison with the rest of Italy,
and tourism, represent a sure and important role and constitute
a potentially notable source of richness and occupation.
The
high level of agriculture that the province has achieved is partly
due to the intense activity of generations of peasants who, over
the years, have tried, successfully, to get the most yield from
the grounds, even wrenching them out of mountains and rocks.
That
is how works of deforestation and "spietramento" of grounds,
the accomplishment of cultivable terraces on the slopes of hills
and mountains and of irrigated zones allowed to gain good levels
in production and profit.
In
this respect the development of technical and commercial structures,
like zootechnics and fruit markets, and of the communication lines
is basilar to a modern and productive agriculture.
The
Valley of the Ippari river is the most essential agricultural area,
notable for the production (early fruits and vegetables, citrus
fruits) and for the presence of the close agricultural market of
Vittoria, representing a basic station for the commercial promotion
and exchange of products of the province.
The
hothouse cultivation is worth-mentioning, especially located along
the coast, despite not quite enchanting effects on the beautiful
shore side of the province. Breeding activities, as well, have enjoyed
a notable development, through the use of modern equipment and structures.
Agriculture,
first support of the province, largely influences industry, where
most of the factories manage, work or commercialise of agricultural
products or are to that field strictly connected.
Oil
and wheat mills, cheese and meat industries, pastry and wine factories
are spread all over the territory of the province. Then the building
industry (notably those working the stone, the asphalt, the pitch-stone),
and the extracting industry (there is oil in the area of Marina
di Ragusa), have rapidly grown up and are today worth-mentioning.
Finally
the tourism represents a considerable resource of the Iblean economy
and able to offer itineraries distinct for concern and ambient aspect:
history and art in the baroque towns of the province and in the
archaeological sites of kaukana, kamarina and Cava d'ispica; the
quiet, sane and fresh nature of country and hill sides; the sea,
of course, with a shore among the most beautiful and impressive
of the whole peninsula.
Notably
the last decade has seen an important growth through the construction
of structures (first of all hotels) whose long deficiency has always
limited the complete development and exploitation of this sector.
This
has also been a problem that has contributed to preserve and maintain
the wild beauty of the Island.
