Vittoria
(25 km from Ragusa; 60,000 inhabitants; 168 m. a.s.l.; zip code
97019; area code 0932) is reachable through an amazing route, set
among vines and old water-mills, once exploiting the stream of the
river Ippari.
Vittoria
is the youngest town in the province and rises on a modern orthogonal
urban plan, shaped as a chess-board.
The
town, founded on April 24th 1607 in honour to the Countess Vittoria
Colonna, is set on one of the most extended plains in Sicily, called,
in ancient times "Plaga Mesopotamica Sicula" (Mesopotamia
of Sicily), also for the corresponding two rivers, Dirillo and Ippari,
bounding its valley.
